5 Simple Eco-Swaps for a Healthier, Toxin-Free Home

5 Simple Eco-Swaps for a Healthier, Toxin-Free Home

Small swaps, made consistently, add up to a home (and a body) with a lot less nasties in it.

One of the questions I get asked most is where to even start with "going natural." It can feel overwhelming, so my advice is always the same: you don't need to overhaul your whole house in a weekend. Just swap one thing at a time, as you run out. Here are five easy places to begin, using swaps I actually use myself at home on the farm.

1. Ditch the paper towel roll

Paper towels are a one-and-done product that adds up in cost and landfill over a year. A compostable, reusable cloth does the same job (dishes, benches, spills) and can be washed and reused hundreds of times before it's composted.

Try: Skipper Swedish Dish Cloths

2. Swap synthetic sprays for plant-based cleaners

Most supermarket sprays are built around synthetic fragrance and harsh chemicals that linger in the air long after you've finished cleaning. Plant-based alternatives clean just as well, without the headache-inducing smell or the warning labels.

Try: Koala Eco Kitchen, Floor or Glass Cleaner

3. Choose refills over single-use plastic

This is the easiest swap to stick with, because it saves money too. Instead of buying a new plastic bottle of dishwasher tablets or laundry powder every time, a concentrated refill (tablets, sheets, or a top-up pouch) means far less plastic for the same number of washes.

Try: Skipper Dishwasher Tablets Refill or Skipper Laundry Sheets Refill

4. Rethink what you put on your skin

Skin absorbs a surprising amount of what you put on it, so it's worth applying the same "read the label" thinking to skincare as you would to food. Tallow-based balms and butters are about as simple as ingredient lists get, and they're genuinely effective for dry skin, cracked hands and sensitive little ones.

Try: Tallow Co Nourish Butter or Barrier Balm

5. Freshen your home naturally

Aerosol air fresheners mask odours with more synthetic fragrance. A natural linen and pillow spray, made with real essential oils, freshens without the chemical hit, and it's a lovely little ritual before bed.

Try: Koala Eco Pillow & Linen Spray

Start with one swap

You don't need to change everything at once. Pick whichever one of these feels easiest for you right now, use it up, and swap the next thing when you run out. That's genuinely how our own home changed over a couple of years, one empty bottle at a time.

You can find all of these (and more) in our shop.
